All you need to know when choosing your first car seat

As your bump grows, it is time to start thinking about a baby car seat. As part of your baby shopping list, your baby car seat is the most important to get right. We have bundled all the information you need, to be able to choose your baby car seat.

Let's start with the basics:

  • A car seat is required by law – Your baby must be in a car seat for every car journey, including the first trip home from the hospital.
  • A baby car seat ensures peace of mind – It’s designed to protect your child in case of an accident, keeping them safe and secure.
  • Avoid second-hand car seats – Always choose a brand-new car seat to ensure it hasn’t been in an accident and meets the latest safety standards.
  • ISOFIX installation is recommended – Installing your car seat with an ISOFIX base makes installation easier and more secure.
  • Travel system compatibility – Maxi-Cosi offers pushchairs that attach to baby car seats, providing a complete travel system for seamless transitions.

Which car seat to choose?

The right car seat depends on how long you plan to use it. Here are your options:

  • Car seats that comply with R129 regulations are designed for newborns up to 12-15 months or 40-87cm. Some of these are i-Size seats, which meet additional criteria for size-based safety and fit compatibility with i-Size-approved vehicles.

  • Multi-age car seat: Can be used from birth up to approximately 135cm height.
  • Convertible baby/toddler car seat: Allows rearward-facing travel for up to 4 years or 105cm.

What to Consider When Buying a Car Seat

Finding the right car seat means ensuring safety, comfort, and compatibility with your car and lifestyle. Here’s what to check before buying.

  • Fit for Your Child – Choose a seat that matches your child's height, age, and weight. Make sure it’s comfortable, with an easily adjustable harness and enough room to grow.
  • Fit for Your Car – Test the seat in your car to ensure secure installation with ISOFIX or a seatbelt. Check if seat belts are long enough and if multiple car seats fit together.
  • Safety Certification – Look for the R129 label, which ensures the seat meets the latest safety standards. Some of these seats will also be i-Size approved, meaning they comply with additional fit and compatibility standards.
  • Rearward-Facing for Longer – Experts recommend keeping your child rear-facing beyond 15 months, ideally up to four years or 105cm, for better neck and spine protection.
  • Test Before You Buy – If possible, install the seat in your car before purchasing to ensure a secure fit.

By considering these factors, you can ensure a safe and comfortable journey for your baby from day one!
