What is Maxi-Cosi’s Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology®?
The innovative Air Safety Technology® by Maxi-Cosi boosts the safety of forward-facing children in cars. In the case of a collision, the built-in Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® in the car seat reduces the forces on a child’s neck up to 55%. The airbags located in the two shoulder pads of the harness inflate with cold air within 0,05 seconds to cushion the head and neck. The airbags automatically deflate just 1 second after the collision.
How does the Maxi-Cosi Air Safety technology® work?
The Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® works quite simply. The airbag trigger system is built in to the back side of the frame of the car seat and two airbags are integrated into the shoulder pads. In the case of a collision, the airbags will inflate with cold air in the blink of an eye (within 50 milliseconds) to cushion the head and neck like a pillow. In the next second, the airbags will automatically deflate. Tests prove that Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® reduces up the forces acting on the neck vertebrae by up to 55% in comparison with any other Maxi-Cosi forward-facing car seat without airbags. So, thanks to this innovative technology children in a forward-facing car seat will be protected even better.
Why has Maxi-Cosi developed the Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology®?
Cars are not designed to protect our children best. That’s why we keep innovating to ensure that children are travelling by car are as safe as possible. A few years ago we asked ourselves why didn’t we use the airbag, one of the greatest invention in car safety, to protect our most precious cargo? We started exploring if airbags could be a solution for better protection of a child’s head and neck in forward-facing car seats. After months of development and testing, a ground-breaking technology for the next generation of forward-facing car seats is the outcome: our Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® will protect a child in a forward-facing car seat much better.
What are the benefits of the Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology®?
The AxissFix Air is the world’s first car seat with airbags. The Air Safety Technology® significantly reduces the impact of a collision by cushioning the head and neck of children: • Up to 55% reduction of the forces acting on the neck vertebrae; • Reduced forward head excursion, limiting the risk of impact with the passenger front seat or dashboard.
Will outside temperatures have any effect on the airbags?
An increase in temperature will have no effect on the airbags.
What happens to a child in a forward-facing car seat in the case of a collision?
When a toddler travels forward-facing in a car, the head will be thrown forward in case of a collision. This forward movement of the head could cause serious injury to the neck but also directly to the head, due to potential contact with the environment (like the front seat or door). Rearward-facing travel cushions the head and spreads the impact over a greater area of the head and back, and protects the vulnerable neck better. Recent research has confirmed that babies are safer in a rearward-facing car seat up to the age of at least 15 months, when the child’s neck is strong enough to better withstand the impulsive force of an average forward collision. That’s why the new i-Size regulation clearly requires the use of rearward-facing seats for all children up to 15 months of age. We advise to transport a child rearward-facing as long as possible, preferably to at least 4 years. After 15 months, parents may decide to switch to forward-facing traveling. For example, because some small cars don’t offer enough space for a rearward-facing car seat. In the case of forward travelling, our new car seat with Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® is the safest alternative.
Is it possible to deactivate the airbag system?
No, this is not possible.
Is the impact of the airbag safe for my children?
Yes, the impact of the airbag is safe for your child. The airbag actually reduces the impact of a collision as it deploys in the direction in which the child is moving. We’re not stopping the head (like a regular frontal airbag in cars) but we catch it very gently. Tests prove that the Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® leads to a reduction of up to 55% of the forces acting on the neck vertebrae in the case of a collision. The cold air coming out of the airbags is harmless.
Does the cold air within the AxissFix Air expire at some point?
We guarantee a warrantee of 10 years on the AxissFix Air. After this period the seat should no longer be used, according to our manual.
Is the trigger system connected to both ISOFIX anchorages or just one?
The airbag trigger system is connected to both ISOFIX anchorages. As all other ISOFIX car seats, the product is therefore only installed correctly once both ISOFIX anchorages are connected.
Does the car seat need to be replaced once the airbag(s) have been deployed? Does the SWAP service apply?
In case you were in an accident, we will replace the full product in our SWAP service, as with any other Maxi-Cosi car seat (dependent on certain conditions). The product that was involved in the accident will not be repaired, but recycled accordingly.
I remember that the front passenger airbag should be switched off when a car seat is installed in the passenger seat. Will the built-in airbags not cause any harm to the child?
For us at Maxi-Cosi, child safety is the most important thing on earth. So, the airbags are totally safe for (your) child. In the case of a collision, the airbags will pop up in the blink of an eye to cushion the head and neck. In the next second, the airbags will automatically deflate.
The harness is secured by clips in the front. Isn’t this against European legislation?
No, R129 legislation allows this. The buckle connects the belt pads and does not function as a lock system. It is also a feature that will limit the possibility of the child being able to remove the harness from the shoulders by themselves.
What happens in case of a side or rear impact?
The airbags will deploy with every kind of impact of 10g or more, and even in a rear accident with a rearward-facing car seat, the AxissFix Air adds an additional level of safety.
Is it possible that the airbags could inflate spontaneously?
No, the airbags will only inflate when the airbag trigger system gets a signal from the ISOFIX anchorage point. If the product is installed, it will only deploy with an minimal impact of 10 G force, the threshold to activate passenger airbags in cars. Until this happens, the system is ‘asleep’.
Do the airbags also inflate when there is no child in the seat?
Yes. The system is active once the car seat is properly installed with the ISOFIX installation system. It does not detect the presence of a child when travelling.
Until what age does my child need to travel in a rearward-facing position?
i-Size (R129 legislation) requires that a child travel rear-facing until the at least 15 months old. If a specific car seat allows a rearward-facing position after this period, we advise to use it in this position for as long as possible
How can you make sure the system is still activated in the seat (how can you make sure the battery is still fine?)
We give a 10 year guarantee on the system. The check if the system is still activated requires expertise and can’t be done by consumers.
