Bath time: Your most googled questions answered

At Maxi-Cosi, we know bath time is more than just getting clean — it’s a quiet time for bonding whilst caring for your baby. But it also comes with a lot of questions, especially for new parents. That’s why we created the Indigo bathing range and the Mavis changing mat — smart, space-saving solutions designed to make bath time easier, safer, and more enjoyable for both you and your baby.

Let’s dive into the most common questions parents ask — and how our new products can help.

Can I bathe my baby in the sink or should I use a baby bath?

While the sink can work, a dedicated baby bath like Indigo or Indigo Plus is safer, more comfortable, and designed just for your baby’s size and needs.

How long can I carry on using the Indigo/Indigo Plus bath?

You can start using either of these two baths from day one as they’re both suitable for newborns. But it doesn’t stop there. You can carry on using them for years, up to when your little one is 4 years old.

How do I safely bathe a slippery newborn?

Newborns can be wiggly! The Indigo Plus includes a newborn insert that cradles your baby securely, making those first splashes safer and more relaxing.

Key feature: QuickDry newborn insert for extra comfort.

What if my baby cries during bath time?

Try keeping the room warm, the water at the right temperature, and use a supportive insert like the one in Indigo Plus to help them feel secure.

Is it okay if water gets in my baby’s ears?

A little water is fine but try to avoid splashing directly. The newborn insert in Indigo Plus helps keep your baby’s head steady and supported.

What’s the ideal water temperature for a baby bath?

The perfect bath temperature is around 37°C to 38°C. No more guessing!

Both the Indigo and Indigo Plus baths come with an integrated thermometer, featuring a colour indicator which turns green when the water is at the perfect temperature.

What’s the best baby bath to use?

That depends on your needs:

Indigo: Foldable, compact, with integrated thermometer.

Indigo Plus: All of the above, plus a newborn insert for extra support.

Both fold flat for easy storage — perfect for small spaces.

Can I give my baby a swaddled bath using the Indigo/Indigo Plus?

Yes, swaddled bathing is a gentle technique that helps newborns feel secure and relaxed during bath time — and Indigo and Indigo Plus baths are well-suited for it thanks to their spacious design

When should my baby get their first bath?

You can give your baby their first bath once the umbilical cord stump has fallen off—usually within the first couple of weeks. Until then, sponge baths are perfect.

How often should I bathe my newborn?

Bathing two or three times a week is plenty for newborns. What matters most is making it a calm, safe experience.

What’s the best material for a changing mat?

The Mavis changing mat is made from waterproof PUR — a material that feels like bare skin and is exceptionally soft and gentle against your baby’s delicate skin. It’s also easy to wipe clean, even after the messiest moments.

Is a changing mat suitable for other uses, such as tummy time?

Yes, a changing mat can be used for tummy time in the early weeks — just start with 1–2 minutes and gradually build up to 10–15 minutes a few times a day, always under supervision. It’s also perfect for when you’re giving your baby massages.

The Mavis changing mat is ideal for those early days. Its high edges and soft surface keep your baby safe and comfy during sponge baths.
