How to choose

How to choose a car seat

The right fit for your child
Always choose the correct car seat for your child’s current height and weight. Age should only be used as an indication. Remember, all children grow at different rates.

Which group?

Group	Weight	Approx Age
Group 0+	Birth to 13kg (29lb)	Birth to 12 months
Group 0+/1	Birth to 18kg (40lb)	Birth to 3.5 years
Group 1	9 - 18kg (20lb – 40lb)	9 months to 3.5 years
Group 2/3	15 - 36kg (33lb - 79lb)	3.5 years to 12 years

It's the law

Children up to 1.35m (1.5m in the Republic of Ireland), or aged 12, whichever comes first, travelling in the front or rear seats of cars, vans and other goods vehicles must travel in the correct child restraint.
